Breathing Into Our Fears

In my Yoga offerings over the next month while the Sun is in the zodiac Scorpio (10/22-11/22), after recently moving from the zodiac Libra (9/21-1021), we will focus on the ways in which the Scorpio archetype connects us; balancing the kidney/urinary bladder meridians, overcoming fear and gaining wisdom, storing and distributing Chi, tapping into our inner strength and power, evolving through deep transformations, & rising from our deaths to be reborn.

Our Kidneys store our Chi, or our life essence. Here this essence of our body can be converted into Kidney Chi, which is then used to help the kidneys control water. The kidneys send clear, healthy water upward to circulate in the body and used, turbid waters downward for elimination. The kidneys also govern utilization of water. Because blood and bones are so intimately connected to water, the kidneys are also responsible for their proper functioning. Determination is said to be stored in the kidneys, which are also directly connected to reproductive health and function.

Disharmony here is suggested by gynecological problems, genital disorders, and problems in the kidneys, lungs, and throat. Examples may include impotence, frequent urination, and weakness in the lower limbs. Anxiety and fear may also occur. Too much fear can weaken the kidneys, but they can also be the source of deep wisdom. When the kidneys work well, we mature gracefully.

Paired with the kidneys, the urinary bladder stores and excretes urine. If there are problems with the kidneys, this may show up in problems such as frequent urination, backaches, headaches, and inability to urinate, mental problems, and disease of the lower limbs.

One way we can help balance the kidneys and the urinary bladder, is to jumper cable either index finger and practice a 10-second breath count (inhale to the count of 4, pause for 1, exhale to the count of 4, pause for 1, & repeat).

This mudra technique comes from a healing energy practice known as Jin Shin Jyutsu and is associated with the 4th depth, connecting us with the kidney and urinary bladder meridians. These meridians are responsible for the flow of our life force energy (Chi) and their function enables us to overcome the negative impacts of mental, emotional, and physical stagnation.
